Improving the Quality and coverage of posts

Week 1 - Friday 25th April

One clear data point we are seeing in our limited user-base is the poor click-through-rates on the home page. I.e. the percentage of users who clicked on atleast one story showed on their dashboard.

Had a few hypotheses

  • Users were confused about what to do (we got this feedback early and added a banner at the top)
  • Too many stories to choose from (decision fatigue - can we do a Tinder style choose/reject one story at a time)
  • Poor list of fintech stories (probably coz we had a limited set of RSS feeds available)

To dig deeper, we spoke to a few users and while UI/UX could be better there was a consistent feedback on having sharper updates. One infact showed us a few updates that were critical for their profile but was not covered at all in our feed.

Hence to solve this, we are now looking to switch to Google Custom Search (from just RSS feeds) where users would be able to choose their own keywords

e.g. QR payments, Push Payments, RTP, Faster Payments, Visa Direct, Mastercard Send  would have been the perfect set of queries for me when I was at Visa.

This is similar to Google News - where one would be confident about coverage. For quality of posts and its relevance we would rely on our existing flows.

This switch does add to the costs involved (CSE APIs are charged beyond just 100 queries a day ) but it should solve for the most critical step 1 of our flow.

More updates soon.
